BCAP After School Program

In spring 2007, Brooklyn Cultural Adventures Program (BCAP) and Heart of Brooklyn (HOB) received a generous award from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to create BCAP After-School. The pilot program works in partnership with Groundwork, Inc., P.S. 260, and the Breukelen Community Center to serve Breukelen Houses, a New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) residence.

BCAP After-School is a four-part initiative designed to connect the youth and families of the Breukelen Houses to the cultural and artistic programming of the Heart of Brooklyn. BCAP After-School begins with a Familiarization Tour of the HOB campus for all key stakeholders, as well as a Kick-Off Event to raise community awareness. This event, held on October 20th, 2007, provided innovative onsite educational experiences to approximately 50 youth and families at the Breukelen Community Center.

As the centerpiece of the initiative, BCAP After-School participants will take part in a year-long curriculum that includes regular offsite visits to each of the iconic HOB institutions. Extending the award-winning curriculum of BCAP Summer Camp to out-of–school time, participants will explore “Myths and Magic” through projects, games, and educator-led tours that weave connections between art, world culture, literature, history, nature, and science.

As the culminating event of BCAP After-School, HOB will host a Family Fun Day in the Heart of Brooklyn. This daylong celebration will feature free family activities at the HOB member institutions for all program participants and their families.

Through BCAP After-School, BCAP continues to expand, grow, and serve the diverse communities of Brooklyn. BCAP After-School is proud to bring the creative learning of BCAP to the youth of East New York.
